Haitian Flag Day is celebrated annually on May 18th to honor the creation of the Haitian flag, a powerful symbol of the country's independence and unity. The day commemorates May 18, 1803, when Haitian revolutionary leaders—most notably Jean-Jacques Dessalines—removed the white portion of the French flag to represent the rejection of colonial rule. They kept the blue and red stripes, which symbolized the union of Black and mixed-race Haitians in the fight for freedom.
This event took place during the Congress of Arcahaie, a pivotal moment in the Haitian Revolution that united various rebel groups against the French. The first version of the flag was sewn by Catherine Flon, Dessalines’ goddaughter, and it remains a cherished symbol of pride, resistance, and national identity.
Today, Haitian Flag Day is celebrated with parades, cultural events, music, and dance both in Haiti and among the Haitian diaspora worldwide, especially in the United States. It serves as a time to reflect on Haiti’s revolutionary history and to honor the resilience and strength of the Haitian people.
